Overview

  • Features an externally operated de-energized tap changer providing two 2½% full-capacity taps above and below nominal.
  • Designed with a base suitable for rolling and skidding, including provisions for jacking and lifting.
  • Offers multiple coolant choices: Type I insulating mineral oil, high-dielectric silicone fluid, or the environmentally friendly, biodegradable FR3 dielectric liquid.

Standard Specifications

  • 60 Hertz operation.
  • 65°C average winding rise.
  • Compliant with IEEE standards that allow a maximum of 5% harmonic content of load current for standard models.

Construction & Enclosure

  • Core is a miter cut design fabricated from high grade grain-oriented silicon steel.
  • Rugged tanks are constructed from precision cut steel and can withstand +10 psi pressure or -15 psi vacuum without leaking or deterioration.
  • Features side-mounted bushings, HV/LV flange connections, and an ANSI 61 paint finish (5 mils thick).
  • Larger units use a full width strip conductor in the low voltage windings to reduce short circuit stresses and improve heat transfer.

Testing, Options & Accessories

    • Undergoes leak tests before tanking and pressure tests prior to painting.
    • Optional 55°/65°C average winding rise configurations provide 12% added capacity when operated at 65°C.
    • Optional “K Rated” designs are available to mitigate high harmonic content from electronic power supplies and motor controls.
    • Optional cooling upgrades include forced air cooling, removable radiators, and future fan wiring.
    • Accessories include neutral grounding resistors, stress cones, current transformers, and tertiary windings for Wye-Wye connections.

Industry Use Cases

  • Utility Grid Substations
  • Large Industrial Processing Plants
  • Solar and Wind Farm Collection Systems
  • Municipal Water Treatment Facilities
1. What is a liquid filled distribution substation transformer?

A liquid-filled distribution substation transformer is a medium-voltage transformer designed to step down electrical power for distribution in commercial and industrial applications. It uses insulating oil to cool and electrical insulation, ensuring reliable and efficient operation.

2. Where are liquid filled substation transformers typically used?

These transformers are commonly used in commercial facilities, industrial plants, data centers, and utility substations where reliable medium-voltage power distribution is required.

3. What are the advantages of liquid filled substation transformers?

Our liquid filled substation transformers offer high reliability, robust tank construction, customizable configurations, efficient cooling performance, and long service life for demanding applications.

4. What power ratings and voltage ranges are available?

Our liquid filled substation transformers are available in capacities up to 10 MVA, with voltage ratings up to 46 kV.

5. What types of insulating fluids are available for liquid filled substation transformers?

Our liquid filled substation transformers are available with two insulating fluid options to meet different application requirements. Standard units use Type II mineral oil, which offers high dielectric strength, durability, and reliability. Natural Ester Fluid: a fire-resistant, vegetable oil-based dielectric fluid is also available. Natural Ester Fluid is classified as a less flammable dielectric liquid, with a flash point higher than 300F making it ideal for indoor installations and areas where less flammable transformers are required.

6. Are these transformers customizable?

Yes, they can be customized with various cooling methods, voltage configurations, tap changers, protection devices, and enclosure designs to meet specific project requirements.

7. What cooling methods are used in liquid filled substation transformers?

These transformers typically use natural cooling systems such as ONAN and KNAN or forced air cooling options for additional overload capacity such as ONAF and KNAF.

8. What standards do liquid filled substation transformers comply with?

They are manufactured in accordance with industry standards such as ANSI, IEEE, and NEMA, ensuring safety, performance, and reliability.

9. What is the typical lifespan of a liquid filled substation transformer?

With proper installation and maintenance, liquid-filled substation transformers typically last over 20 years, depending on operating conditions and load demands.

10. Are custom-engineered substation transformer solutions available?

Yes, we provide custom-engineered solutions tailored to specific project requirements, including unique electrical configurations, environmental conditions, and application needs. Submit a quote today.

11. How quickly can you deliver a padmount transformer, and what options exist for urgent projects?

Lead times depend on configuration. Stocked standard units can ship considerably faster than full custom builds. For time-critical projects, our Bull Rush emergency program expedites production and can deliver units in as little as 5 working days in qualifying situations. Because our transformers are manufactured in North America, they are not subject to the international freight delays and customs lead times that affect imported equipment, which is a meaningful advantage when project schedules are tight or when a replacement unit is needed urgently due to a field failure.
